How to Book a Practical Driving Test?
To book your practical test, you must first have passed your theory exam within the last two years. The standard fee is £62 for weekday tests and £75 for evenings, weekends, or bank holidays. When you log onto the DVSA booking system, you can search for available slots up to 24 weeks in advance. However, in high-demand areas like South London, Croydon, and Sutton, slots can fill up fast. We recommend being flexible with your choice of test centre; while you might prefer Morden or Mitcham, being open to Tolworth or West Wickham can sometimes help you find an earlier date.
If the dates shown are too far away, don’t panic. You can book the “best available” slot and then use the “Change your driving test” service to look for cancellations. At Purple Driving School, our driving instructors often assist students in identifying the best times to check for these earlier slots—typically early Monday mornings or late at night when the system refreshes. Remember, you can only have one practical test booked at a time, and you must give at least three clear working days’ notice to change or cancel without losing your fee.
Why Choose Purple Driving School?
Local DVSA-Approved Driving Instructors
The “Purple Story” is built on a foundation of trust, expertise, and excellence. Founded by a team of 5-star rated driving instructors, we moved away from the “one-size-fits-all” approach of larger franchises to create a community focused on the individual. Our USP is our “Calm Confidence” philosophy; we don’t just teach you to pass; we teach you the skills to drive for life. Every Purple instructor is handpicked for their patience and safety record, ensuring that whether you are a nervous beginner in Wandsworth or taking an intensive course in Kingston, you receive elite-level coaching tailored to your personality.
Mastering the Routes: Croydon, Sutton & Merton
Success on test day often comes down to “home-turf” advantage. Our driving lessons in Croydon, Sutton, and Mertonare specifically designed to familiarize you with the most common test routes used by local examiners. We take you through the tricky junctions of the Purley Way, the residential challenges of Morden, and the high-speed merges in Mitcham. By the time your test date arrives, those “scary” roundabouts will feel like second nature. Our local expertise ensures you aren’t just a driver—you’re a local expert who knows exactly what the examiner is looking for in these specific boroughs.
Navigating Kingston & Wandsworth with Ease
Driving in South West London requires a unique blend of urban awareness and technical skill. From the complex one-way systems of Croydon, Sutton, Kingston to the bustling, pedestrian-heavy streets of Wandsworth, our instructors provide the high-quality tuition needed to excel. We specialize in teaching you how to manage busy bus lanes, tight riverside corners, and the frequent stop-start traffic typical of these areas. By choosing Purple, you gain access to instructors who know the “hidden” challenges of the Mitcham and Morden test routes, giving you the best possible chance of a first-time pass.

How Purple Helps You Pass Fast
At Purple Driving School, we believe that passing your driving test shouldn’t feel like a gamble; it should be the natural result of high-quality training and mental preparation. Our approach to driving lessons is built on a specific framework designed to eliminate test-day nerves and replace them with what we call “Purple Composure.” While many schools simply teach the mechanics of steering and shifting, our driving instructors in South London and Surrey focus on the psychological side of driving, ensuring you stay calm when navigating the high-pressure environments of Croydon or Kingston.
One of our primary USPs is our “Mock Test Mastery.” Before you ever head to the Morden or Tolworth test centres, we simulate the exact conditions of the DVSA exam. Your instructor will adopt a professional, silent-observer role, mirroring the examiner’s behavior. This allows you to experience the “test atmosphere” in the safety of a dual-controlled car, identifying potential minor faults before they become serious ones. By the time you reach the actual exam, you aren’t facing a new experience—you are simply repeating a routine you’ve already mastered.
Furthermore, we pride ourselves on our deep local knowledge of Sutton, Merton, and Wandsworth. We don’t just stick to quiet side streets; we take you onto the specific roundabouts, bus lanes, and one-way systems that local examiners favor. Our instructors are experts in the “trouble spots” of South West London, providing you with the technical tips and visual cues needed to handle them perfectly. When you choose Purple, you aren’t just getting a car and an instructor; you are getting a 5-star support system dedicated to making you a safe, independent driver for life.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance can I book my test in South London?
You can book up to 24 weeks ahead. Due to high demand in Croydon and Sutton, we recommend booking as soon as you pass your theory test.
Which test centre should I choose?
Most Purple students choose Morden, Mitcham, Tolworth, or Croydon. Your instructor will advise which centre best suits your local training.
Can I book a test before my instructor says I'm ready?
While you can, we strongly advise against it. Our USP is “proven success,” and we want you to feel “Purple-level” confident before facing an examiner.
What do I need to bring on the day?
You must bring your UK provisional photocard license. Bringing your theory pass certificate and booking confirmation is also recommended.
Do I use my own car or my instructor’s?
Most students use their driving instructor’s car because it has dual controls and they are familiar with its handling.
What happens if I fail?
You must wait at least 10 working days before you can take another test. Your Purple instructor will help you bridge any skill gaps in the meantime.
Are there weekend tests available in local test centres?
Yes, but they cost £75 instead of £62 and are highly competitive. Check the GOV.UK site regularly for weekend availability.
How do I find a cancellation?
Log into the “Change your driving test” service. The system updates frequently, so persistence is key for finding earlier dates in Wandsworth or Merton.
Will the examiner try to trick me?
No. Examiners are there to ensure you are safe and competent. Our driving lessons include mock tests to get you used to their professional tone.
What is the "Show Me, Tell Me" section?
These are safety questions about your car. Your Purple instructor will provide a full guide and practice these with you before your test.
Can I change my test centre after booking?
Yes, you can change your location up to six times till 31 March 2026 then it will be restricted to two times provided there is an available slot at the new centre. This a latest change in DVSA practical driving test rules.
Why is Purple's pass rate so high?
Our instructors focus on “Skills for Life.” By the time you reach the Morden or Croydon test centre, you’ll have the calm confidence to handle any situation.
